                        O’Reilly Retires,
               New RCI Director Appointed
                    Integration Continues

In a sudden turn of events, a new General Manager of Radio Canada International has been appointed effective immediately.

On Tuesday afternoon, 12 June, employees were given little more than an hour’s notice of a meeting called by Sylvain Lafrance, Vice President French Radio and New Media, at our domestic service CBC. Lafrance has officially been responsible for RCI within CBC since June 1.

Lafrance announced that RCI Executive Director Robert O’Reilly Is retiring, and that he will be replaced by Denis Doucet. Doucet comes from our domestic French service.

Lafrance and Doucet had little to say about the massive changes going on at RCI, saying they were new to the dossier.

Lafrance did repeat his intention to continue the integration of RCI into our domestic service.

He underlined two principles: broadcast and production logic.

Broadcast logic suggests that RCI must keep its unique identity. So, for RCI listeners the “sound” will remain.

But Lafrance continued, production logic suggests that there be the “maximum synergy, maximum integration” of RCI within the domestic service.

E- mail sent to staff at RCI and staff at the domestic service CBC, announcing the new appointment..
