APPOINTMENT OF NEW GENERAL MANAGER
AT RADIO CANADA INTERNATIONAL

After nearly 25 years with the CBC, Robert (Bob) O'Reilly, Executive Director of Radio Canada International and International Relations, has announced that he will be retiring from the Corporation. Under Bob's leadership during a time of difficult budgetary constraint, RCI has continued to be recognized around the world as well as in Canada as a leader in international broadcasting. We wish Bob every success in his future endeavours.

He will be replaced by Denis Doucet, whose appointment as General Manager of RCI is effective immediately. Prior to this appointment, Denis was General Manager, Resources and Operations, CBC French Radio. He has broad management and development experience at the Corporation, in both Radio (where he spent most of his CBC career) and Television.

Denis is now in charge of all RCI activities, and one of his main tasks will be to revise the mandate and operations of the service. The purpose of this exercise is to ensure that RCI can live up to the challenges of a modern international broadcasting system and fit in with the Corporation's international strategy.

I will be responsible on an acting basis for the international relations aspect of Bob's initial mandate until the task force looking into this question has completed its study of the CBC's international role.

Denis Doucet's appointment has some repercussions on the operating structure of French Radio. Until the position of Denis is filled, Jacques Tremblay, Director of Administration, and François Patenaude, Director of Operations, will report to me directly. The position of General Manager, Resources and Operations, will be posted in the coming weeks. Finally, Rémi Villeneuve, Manager, Program Evaluation, will coordinate on an acting basis regional issues for which Denis was responsible.

I want to thank Denis for accepting this challenging position.  I know you will join me in wishing him all the best.
